Frequently Asked Questions

Listed below are some of the frequently asked questions about curbing. If you have any questions or need additional information, please visit the Contact page for information on how to reach us.

How many feet of curbing can can I do in a day?

I have seen a crew of 3 produce 1700 feet of straight gray 6x4 curbing in one day. However, to accurately estimate a one day job, there are many factors involved. For example, do you have a trailer, and what job capacity can it handle? Our trailer is designed to keep you organized and it makes the mixing process easier. Do you have a sod cutter? The Sod Cutter prepares the landscaping for Curb installation, with minimal impact to existing landscape. How many people are on your crew? We recommend three, one to mix, one to keep the curbing machine supplied with concrete, and one to run the machine. Some curbing companies will say you can do it with one person, but you’ll find that this is unreasonable. You won’t be able to maintain a consistent workload and you’ll not be able to produce a consistent product. What style of curb are you providing? Stamping and lighting takes time.

How many should be on a crew?

You will need at least 2 people. Borderline has sold equipment to husband and wife teams and they are very successful. However we recommend at least 3 people. One person to mix, one person to run the machine and one person to shovel.

What equipment do I need besides what is in the turnkey package to get started?

Wheelbarrows, shovels, hoses, hand tools, sand, mortar mix, concrete color, sealer, fiber mesh, and backer rod if you are doing lighting. The cost of tools is around $300.00 and the sand, mortar mix and color depends on what you want for an inventory. It is also necessary to pull the trailer with a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck.

What is the minimum amount of equipment I need to get started?

To get started you can spend only $7690.00. This is the cost of the Curb machine, Mixer and $300.00 in miscellaneous tools. This also assumes that you already have a truck and or trailer.

Why purchase a Borderline Trailer, instead of using a Truck?

If your truck breaks down you will not be able to work until your truck is fixed. With a trailer you can always find another truck. The Borderline Trailer has been designed and redesigned for over 25 years and it by far the safest and best trailer on the market. The trailer is also a driving billboard for advertising. When on a job and you run out of materials you can simply unhook your trailer and leave your crew working while someone else runs for materials. With the Borderline trailer you can also lock up machines and expensive equipments in a contained area on the trailer. Making it safer for overnight storage.

What is the trailer weight?

The trailer is 3000 lbs empty and 10,000 - 12,000 lbs completely full with sand, cement, machines and accessories.

How curb many designs does Borderline offer?

Borderline has at least 20 designs. Anything from a 4X4 to 12X6 We do not have any bigger then the 12X6 and even the 12X6 is stretching it There really is not a market for 12x6 and it really is not cost efficient to put in that large of a curb. You will see advertised a sidewalk size curb with our competitors, we have tested it and it cracks easily and takes lots of man-hours to put down. You would be smarter to pour a sidewalk or use some sort of stepping-stones etc. The cost of our designs very from $110 to $220 per undercarriage Look for our website for designs.

Is Training Necessary?

We know how precious your time is and respect that, however; doing curbing is not like any other concrete work out there and we do highly recommend training. We promise you will not be sorry that you spent the time with us. And if you need a refresher you are welcome to come back for more training. Our goal is to make you successful.

How many curber's are in my area? And may I call them?

We recommend you look up in your local phone book for that information, and yes, re recommend you call a local curber and ask about the business. Most curber's don't mind if you are honest up front and let them know you are interested in the curbing business. There are miles of work out there and it actually helps the business if there are plenty of curbers.
We also recommend that you do what they are doing in Washington. They have formed an alliance and they keep there prices the same. They have meetings with one another to make the curbing business very successful in their area. Curbers are very funny when it comes to equipment, and we recommend you do your own homework when it comes to buying equipment.

Is it necessary to get a contractors license in my area?

This totally depends on your area. You will need to check your local contractors board. In most states they have not even heard of Curbing so you will just need to get a business letter. If you need some sort of letter for your contractor's board or licensing office, just give us a call and we will get the necessary information to you.

What is my working capital?

This will vary depending upon certain decisions that you make. If you start by working out of your home, the only expenses you need to finance are payroll, and materials. Some companies have started with as little as $ 1000.00 in working capital. Those companies work mainly for residential customers (payment at completion of job) and generate cash during the week to meet payroll and purchase of materials. Once they are established they begin to work with contractors, which require the extension of credit, and credit requires more working capital. If you choose to lease an office and yard space for storage of materials and equipment, there are additional expenses required besides the rent. A full blown curbing operation could require as much as $15000.00 in working capital for expenses i.e. payroll, material, utilities, rent, gasoline, telephone, legal and accounting, insurance, office supplies, etc. You can start out as little or as big as you want. Many curbing companies have poor boyed (That is Australian for starting with little money.) the business and are very successful now.
